Cut Numbers

November 30, 2007

A few weeks ago, UNAIDS and the WHO revised down the number of those infected globally with HIV/AIDS. Revised down, that is, by 6 million people. What’s a journalist to do when faced with “official” math that doesn’t add up? Harvard research scientist Daniel Halperin provides his equation for the weight of numbers.

President Bush the other day stated he wanted Congress to send him a bill that will allow $30 billion for AID/HIV care and/or research, most presumably to go to Africa, where he can rape the country of its natural resources in return. He knows abstinence-only education does not work, yet he still threatens those in need, stating that they will not get any help, though the money is available, unless you do as he says, even if more people will be infected with HIV and more people, adults and children, will die from complications due to this. Please look over the five sources below, for more information. All but one is from 2007.

To get the billions in AIDS money promised by the U.S. countries like Uganda must indoctrinate its young people in abstinence-only rhetoric.

A couple of numbers I've often wondered about are those of evangelicals and born-again Christians. I've seen references to 40 million, 50 million, even 80 million Americans -- always without attribution. That could be up to one-quarter of the population -- even more, if you discount children. I've never met more than a handful of evangelicals and born-again Christians. Granted, I live on the East Coast, and the numbers are lower here -- but that means they'd have to be waaaaay higher in the rest of the country to make up for this area. Any idea where these numbers come from, and why they're repeated so blithely?

An old joke about taking attendance: "Everyone who is absent please raise your hands."

Everyone uses the number 12 million for the estimate of illegal immigrants in the US. I've always wondered what the basis is for that estimate. How does the government count people who are hiding from the government? Everyone here illegally please stand up?

In the Vietnamese War, US ground forces learned that even women and little children could be trying to kill them. In guerrilla warfare in general, the guerrillas (more properly called terrorists when they deliberately attack civilian populations rather than just military targets), are not in uniform and may be hard to distinguish from civilians. Like criminals, some hide behind masks or hoods to keep from being recognized, thus allowing them to pursue civilian lives between terrorist actions. Therefore, what trust should we put in estimates of civilian casualties, such as civilians killed in the Iraq War (estimates of 150,000 to 400,000 have been given at different times), or in Lebanon or in Palestine?

I'm not saying any of these tragic estimates are drastically wrong, just wondering how they are made?
