Field Guide

February 05, 2010

For years, the remarkable accuracy of video game football was the closest armchair quarterbacks could get to actual NFL play-on-the-field. The actual game inspired the virtual one. But increasingly, according to Chris Suellentrop in this month’s Wired Magazine, the trend has reversed. A generation of actual NFL players, raised on games like Madden NFL, are bringing the influence of video games into their real play.

You have swapped the "Game Time" and "Field Guide" sound bytes. I wanted to hear the Game Time clip, but the Field Guide clip played. Both are interesting, but thought you might want to know about the error.

Is the musician behind Dead Alive real or just punning on the name Kurt Weill, of Three Penny Opera and Happy End fame?

This isn't quite timely, but I couldn't help but be slightly irritated by Garfield's comment that Madden is so good that the NFL granted EA the exclusive rights to use its players in their game.. implying somehow that this meant something about the quality of the game. While I cannot attest to the quality of the game, I wanted to point out that EA paid an outrageous sum of money to the NFL for those rights in order to shut their competitors out of the market. It's easy to be ubiquitous when you're literally the only game in town.
